“Look Listen and feel”

As a lifeguard and beach lover I would dream about lifeguarding on the beach. I never got there. I would always want to bring a piece of the beach home with me. Sand, rocks, shells would mark each year at the beach. Look, listen, and feel refers to the steps you go through to access a drowning victim. Look to survey the scene, listen for breathing, and feel for a pulse. What if you could capture the sounds sights and feelings of the ocean? Could something made out of clay save the sounds of the beach? Steal the sounds of the ocean in a tabletop set up. Maybe I can’t steal the ebb of the tides but the sound of the sea breeze seemed possible. At the same time I could house all the sand collected over the years.

“My King-size milk cup”

As a simply functional object my milk cups needed to be king-sized. I Love milk usually skim although it may seem like water to some. I can drink a gallon a day. It soothes my stomach and calms my nerves. I also am a big donut and cookie fan. However, nothing goes down with out milk. If I buy cookies, milk goes in the cart shortly after. If you are a milk lover like me you know that an eight-ounce glass just does not cut it. Even the biggest glass in my cupboard is only about twenty ounces, believe it or not I need two to wash down the cookies and of course dunk them. One last problem with large hands dunking only works for the first couple of gulps. Sometimes I even use one glass to dunk and one glass to sip. My King-size milk was designed after a Burger king king-sized soda cup which provides ample dunking space and extreme drinkability.
project 1
“Live Mortar”

Immigrants arrived in America hoping for streets paved with gold. Maybe there was some gold but not enough to pave the streets. So maybe the gold dream of America turned to brass, but at least we have this nice green ring around the country. However it is quickly disappearing. Our land is all we really have through manifest destiny we have gathered as much land as we could despite knocking off the rightful owners of the land. Since we have it lets take care of what we got. You can’t pave all of paradise. Like central park, we can organize our urban sprawl to harmonize with the landscape not take it over. Decide to use live mortar between our iron giants in the major cities of the US. The “Celestine Prophesy” by James Redfield gives insight into understanding why our society needs to keep safe some of the oldest natural environments in the world.

I feel that the margins we live in give us all labels if not simply numbers. As an artist and teacher I am marginalized always. They say those who can do and those who can't, teach. On top of that as an art teacher my job will never be seen in most cases as equal to a math teacher, Which is twice as unfair. I cannot say that at one point in my life i felt that crafts was not as equal of an art as painting or sculpting maybe its just because i was prejudice. However through schooling I've learn a general respect for woodworking, metalworking, ceramicists, jewelers, 3-d, 2-d and anything else which allows for expression. Being skirted or marginalized is not where you want to be just because of the popular conceptions. without being judged by the "pop" if you enjoy what you do then do it; even if Duchamp's urinal is regarded as a higher art then a beautifully thrown chili bowl.

craft is looked down upon at times in the present, but the arts and crafts movement at its time was regarded as one of the strongest and earliest American art movement. I love hand carved oak furniture. However I don't feel Serra's tilted arc is any way going in the right direction. Yes maybe he makes a lot of money on his steel sculptures but it doesn't equate to a functional or thoughtful piece. I'm surprised it stayed up for so long. The highest art at one time was to actually make an object by hand from the land. Now it seems as though all an artist has the do is birth an idea or ideal and with enough money he or she can put to work nameless artisans. I suppose with the economy in the state that it is putting nameless artists to work as pedestals for a well known artist isn't the worst thing but they should at least receive credit.
